However, your body naturally becomes less alert in the early afternoon, even if you do not eat lunch. Eating a meal then may make the existing dip feel even stronger.
What Causes a Food Coma?
Food comas are common and usually short-lived, but scientists still do not know exactly why they happen. Eating triggers several changes throughout the body, and a combination of these responses may affect how alert you feel.
Signals Between Your Gut and Brain May Influence Alertness
Your gut and brain are in constant communication. This connection helps control hunger, fullness, digestion, and how your body uses energy.
After you eat, your stomach and intestines begin breaking down the meal and absorbing nutrients. At the same time, they send messages to your brain that food has arrived and that you are becoming full. Some of these signals may also influence how awake you feel.
One small study tried to separate the effects of chewing from the effects of digestion on sleep. Participants either swallowed a meal or chewed the same food without swallowing it. They fell asleep slightly faster after swallowing, when the food reached the digestive tract, and digestion began. This suggests that signals released after food reaches the gut may contribute to post-meal sleepiness, although the effect observed in the study was brief [1].
For years, people also believed that eating made you sleepy because blood moved away from the brain and toward the stomach. While blood flow to the digestive organs increases after a meal, your brain continues to receive the blood it needs. Research has since challenged this explanation [2].
Some brain pathways involved in hunger also help regulate wakefulness. One of them involves orexin, a brain chemical that supports appetite and alertness. Laboratory and animal research suggest that food-related signals can change orexin activity, but scientists have not shown that orexin alone causes food coma in humans [3].
Hormones and Nutrients Change After You Eat
After eating, your blood levels of glucose, insulin, amino acids, and digestive hormones start to change.
These changes help your body process nutrients and recognize when you have eaten enough. When you eat carbs, your blood glucose rises. Your pancreas responds by releasing insulin, which helps glucose enter your cells so your body can use it for energy.
Insulin also changes the balance of amino acids circulating in your blood. This may affect how much tryptophan reaches your brain. Tryptophan is an amino acid your body can use to produce serotonin and melatonin, which are both involved in sleep.
This does not mean that eating carbs automatically makes you sleepy. It also does not mean that one food or hormone is responsible for every food coma.
One older study comparing carb-heavy meals with high-fat meals found different changes in insulin and digestive hormones. But those differences did not provide one clear explanation for post-meal sleepiness [4].
Your Body Clock Creates an Afternoon Dip
Lunch is often blamed for the afternoon slump, but the time of day may be just as important as the meal itself.
Your body follows an internal 24-hour clock known as your circadian rhythm. This internal body clock helps regulate when you feel alert and when you become sleepy. Heavy Meals May Make You Sleepier
Food comas are often linked to Thanksgiving dinners, buffets, and other hefty meals. Portion size might be a key factor. A heavy meal can cause a stronger post-meal response than a light snack. It may also make you feel overly full and sluggish.
In a small driving study, participants who slept only five hours ate either a light lunch or a much heavier one. Those who had the heavier meal showed more signs of drowsiness and drifted from their lane more often during a two-hour simulated drive [6].
Since the participants were already sleep-deprived, the findings suggest that a heavy lunch can worsen existing drowsiness. You might notice a similar effect after eating until you're overly full, having multiple courses, or finishing a large restaurant meal.
What You Eat May Affect How Sleepy You Feel
Carbs are often blamed for post-meal tiredness, but research does not show that carb-heavy meals always make people sleepier than other types of meals.
In a small, older study, participants fell asleep faster after eating a solid meal than after drinking water. However, researchers found no clear difference among carb-heavy, high-fat, and mixed meals [7].
Turkey is another food commonly blamed for food comas because it contains tryptophan. But turkey is usually eaten as part of a heavy meal that includes carb-heavy side dishes, desserts, and sometimes alcohol.
How sleepy you feel may depend on the meal as a whole, including its mix of carbs, protein, fat, and fiber, as well as alcohol and the time of day.
Post-Meal Sleep May Have an Evolutionary Purpose
Post-meal sleep has been observed in several animal species, suggesting that eating and rest may share a long-standing biological connection.
In one study, fruit flies slept more for a short period after eating. How much they slept varied depending on the size and nutrient content of the mea [8]l.
Researchers suggest that resting after eating might help animals switch from looking for food to digesting and storing nutrients. It could also aid in conserving energy following a meal.
Most of this evidence comes from animal studies, and researchers have not confirmed that human food comas develop for the same purpose.
